Pay Per Click Advertising

Many affiliates pay for advertising because they think the scatter gun approach will pay dividends, but sadly Internet advertising has become more expensive as everyone competes for the same search words, and while Google sell advertising by establishing advertising costs – auction style.

The auction style business approach will necessitate that affiliates who use Pay Per Click advertising will need to focus on less obvious derivative terms, so rather than pay for the word affiliate, focus on the term affiliate program. If you perfect the craft of PPC advertising, you should attract many customers to your website.

Pay per click is an Internet advertising model where search terms that people search for in search engines like Google, generate search results. If you search for any word in Google, you may notice that on the right hand side of the page some little adverts appear. If you click on these ads, you get directed to the advertiser’s website. Everytime you click an ad, the advertiser gets charged a rate, dictated by how competitive the search term is.

Here are some tips on how to advertise effectively and cheaply.

A search word like mobile phone on Google will return over 200 million impressions, so to advertise mobile phones; such a search term will be expensive. It is cheaper to advertise niche products like hovercraft because not so many people search for this product. Search for hovercraft on Google and search results deliver 2.3 million results, so 100 times more people search for mobile phones than hovercraft. Generally speaking, hovercraft sell for more money than mobile phones, so pay per click advertising for common search terms is highly competitive and due to auction style bidding, very expensive.

Make your advert as relevant to your product. You might write an ad – Click here to find our all about hovercraft. Bad move. Hovercraft was only mentioned once out of 10 words. Instead, try 3 words only, one word per line.

Then add another advert and measure the effectiveness of each to see which ad gets the most number of clicks, and compare cost per click. Obviously your objective is to get more clicks for lower costs per click.

Run two adverts – after a few days, delete the loser. Try to add a more relevant advertisement to repeat the process and keep improving the relevancy of the adverts.

From experience we found picture adverts more effective than text ads, and content advertising more effective than network.

Google AdWords now allow you to make display adverts that resemble little slide shows – these appear to work really well through content advertising. However, target your audience to get costs down, and use the Google keyword tool to find the less competitive search terms, for example “hovercraft” might cost more per click than “buy hovercraft”.

Some people may not even know they want a hovercraft, so find an advert to appeal to microlight, autogyro, gyrocopter, helicopter pilots – how about “Hover really Low” – However, although these groups may have disposable income, you might waste money appealing to these types of customers. You really do need to measure results so sign up for Site Meter to get stats from your site to see how many visitors you get. “SuperYacht Hovercraft Tender” might work well on search term SuperYacht captain.

The term “How to make Hovercraft” might appeal to readers of engineering type magazines, such as Popular Mechanics, and with content advertising, you can direct which websites Google will place your adverts on. The search term “Work from Home” might be best used on content advertising websites focusing on the work from home type of visitor, so direct content advertising to place the right type of advert in front of the right type of customer.
